Page 27 of the album. The Shield and the Sword November 7, 1990, Moscow. Standard festive decoration of the “Lubyanka” building, the apotheosis of the “militant force of the Party”. Never to appear after 1991, the official end of KPSS (CPSU - Communist Party of the Soviet Union). Note: Large portrait on the building is Lenin's portrait. In front of the Lenin's portrait one can see Felix Dzerzhinsky sculpture which is located at the center of large Moscow Dzerzhinsky plaza. Dzerzhinsky was the creator of VChK, which murdered ~64 mlns of people in GULAG and has been renamed several times - the latest name was KGB. |
Page 30 of the album. "Down with it!" August 22, 1991, Moscow. The putsch has failed. Victorious crowds. Dzerzhinsky's sculpture has been taken out using a hoisting crane later during the night. Note: It was an important step of dismantling Matured Socialism (almost Built Communism) in the USSR and the USSR itself. |
Page 175 of the album. Uncle Kolya 1978 In the picture, he is only 43. He has been working on a collective farm all his life. Page 133 of the album. The Woman-Coffer 1971, Kremenchug The shop is near the railway station, where there used to be a Jewish ghetto. The artist was found out: "He's a spy!" Then everything was sorted out. "A spy can't have a Pobeda* watch", said the man who wore socks. They let me go. * Pobeda watch is the first Russian watch. Page 67 of the album. Tanya in the Kitchen 1970s, Moscow, Bolshoy Golovin Lane. The kitchen is too tiny for talks about the bright future. Before the Revolution there were the rooms, where one could get a prostitute, then there was socialism in kommunalka*. This is indeed the place with a story. * kommunalka - an apartment, which before the Revolution belonged to one family. After Revolution the largest percent of population, especially in cities and towns, lived in and used the same apartments as a commune apartments, i.e. one to three or more families in each room; total number of families could be up to 20 in 5 rooms. But there was one toilet, one bath and one kitchen. One of those infamous kitchen one can see on the photo. Page 85 of the album.
The yard in summer 1980, Moscow, Kisel'ny blind alley. This exotic place was inhabited and, occasionally, films were shot there because the location was exceptional. Note: We should keep in mind that during period of Matured Socialism Moscow got about 60% of all budget money for new housing and maintenance. Everybody in the USSR dreamed about getting permission to live in Moscow, since in Moscow there was cornucopia. Now try to imagine how the most people lived in other cities, towns and villages. Page 120 of the album.
Science of a Vegetable Store 1980s, Moscow. A classical scene from the "the life of scientists": pre-packing potatoes 3 kilos to a pack. 200 packs and, there, home you go. Rather than meddle in integers, one should first repay one's debt to the people, see? Page 166 of the album.
The Hard Life 1968, Tbilisi. It might be that Tbilisi is really little Paris but it is surely a city of no small contrasts. Not everybody there lived the way some did on Lenin avenue. |

No cornucopia, definitely. For women, life is the hardest in our blessed country.
