From Capitalism to Communism
(Classification of Socio-Economic Systems)
This paper have been written after long reflection. We do not lay claim to comprehensive analysis. We would like to share some of our thoughts with our readers. These thoughts have been gleaned from day-to-day experience of our two relatively long lives, one in the USSR and another one in the USA.
Last presidential poll of Democratic Party showed that majority of democrats feels more comfortable with Socialism than with Capitalism. When we saw poll results on TV and read on Internet we were frightened. The worst of our nightmares of the last 35 years has been realized. When, about 45 years ago, we started thinking about emigration from the Mature Socialism of the USSR and carefully talked about it with some of our relatives and friends the one of the first questions, they asked, was “why?” Our answer was that we do not want to grow old in a Mature Socialist country or in a Communist country, we do not want to see what happens with our children and grandchildren and we do not want to be treated as animals at the end of our lives or simply be killed by KGB GULAG, “free” medicine or any other way, usually used by communist communities of the USSR to free place for a young communist cannibal. During our 40 years in the USSR we lived through more than enough of Socialism/ Communism. During last 38+ years in the USA we saw how socio-economic system of Capitalism was slowly changed in direction of Socialism and how, during last 7-8 years, this change drastically accelerated. We are scared by fast coming changes, which indicate, that our family again may live inside of a Socialist system and we will again see all horrors, from which we have ran many years ago.
We believe that, as the poll shows, one third of the United States is ready to accept Socialism since absolute majority of those people have no even a vague idea what it means. As in any country of the world, which has lived through Socialism/Communism or is living now through it, in the USA the idea of Socialism/Communism is pushed forward by very small group of people, who want to get absolute power over whole country by any means. As experiences of the USSR, Nazi (The National Socialist German Workers' Party – NSDAP) Germany, China, Cuba, and many other Socialist/Communist countries of the past and the present showed, the few hundreds of ruthless power-hungry people, organized in The Party with strict discipline, with support of Socialist/Communist propaganda in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV, created by university professors on money from few rich people or from bank robberies, can capture absolute power in a country with several hundred millions of people. In short time after they get the power this small group of Socialists/Communists makes slaves of all citizens of the country by murdering about 10% of population and sending another 10% of population to concentration hard labor camps.
The only chance for any country to protect the people from Socialism/Communism slavery and other horrors, is education of the people about real meaning of such terms as Capitalism, Fascism, Nazism, Socialism, Mature Socialism, Communism, etc, which describe various Socio-Economic Systems (SESs) existed in the world of XIX and XX centuries and are existing today. We should emphasize words real meaning, since today there is huge volume of multi-lingual information, such as books, magazines, internet, radio, TV, movies, etc, that provide different, often conflicting, points of view about theoretical base and practical reality of each of the SESs. Any student of various existing SESs knows that all published information may be described as chaos, i.e. being in complete disorder and confusion. Some people call it honest misconception or misunderstanding between people, other people call it intentionally created information chaos, or intentional disinformation, which creates opportunity for devoted socialists/communists to “catch fish in murky water”.
In this paper we are making an attempt of creating classification system of existing SESs. Since our intention is to consider mainly SESs of the last hundred years, we believe, that during this period of time there were arguably no two countries in the world with identical SES. In other words, there were as many SESs as various countries in the world. It tell us that classification of all SES, existing in the world, is not a simple problem. Most studies limit their classification by three SESs – Capitalism, Socialism and Communism. Starting from XIX century Karl Marx’s definitions of Socialism and Communism, as different stages of Dictatorship of Proletariat, definitions for all three SES are constantly changed. The large number of encyclopedias and dictionaries exist today but it is almost impossible to find similar definitions for Capitalism, Socialism and Communism in any two encyclopedias and/or dictionaries. And existing definitions are constantly changed by various socialist and communist propaganda groups in various countries and universities to match ideas of those groups. Many encyclopedias and dictionaries contradict each other. Maybe it is time to move from various theoretical definitions of SES in each country, announced by the country government and by media, to facts and objective analysis of the country policies and activities. Any objective evaluation and conclusion about any country’s real SES should be based on objective facts, policy and activity of the country’s government. In short, correct classification of any country SES should be based on analysis of what the government of the country really does and not on what the government and media claim it does.
The best way to find, what kind of policies and activities are in agreement with each SES, is to study historical precedents. Today it can be done since many governments started claiming to have one or another SES in XX century. History, from the end of XIX century to the beginning of XXI century, demonstrates creation, existence and abolition of many SES in various countries. Below we consider seven SESs - Capitalism, Crony Capitalism, Fascism, Nazism, Socialism, Mature Socialism, and Communism, in various countries of the world. There were and are other SESs, such as Feudalism, Tribalism, various styles of Crony Capitalism, etc., in many countries of the world in the past and present time but we confine ourselves to seven mentioned above SESs. In future our classification system may be expanded.
Study shows that classification of known SESs may start from two poles – right conservative pole (Capitalism) and left liberal pole (Communism). SESs of majority of developed countries in the world can find their place between those two poles. Seven SESs arranged in order from the right conservative pole (Capitalism) to the left liberal pole (Communism). Several countries, existed in the past and/or existing today, with corresponding type of SES are shown next to each SES as examples:
SES Countries with corresponding SES
Capitalism - Great Britain of XIX century and beginning of XX century,
United States of XIX century and beginning of XX century.
Crony Capitalism – The term crony capitalism refers to forms of capitalism in which leading businessmen enjoy close personal relationships with key politicians.
France, Italy after WWII,
Russia after revolution of 1991,
United States starting from middle of 1930, and especially after 1992 and 2008.
Fascism - Italy under the rule of Dictator Mussolini,
Spain under the rule of General Franco.
Nazism - Germany under the rule of Hitler’s Nazi (The National Socialist German
Workers' Party – NSDAP) Party during first 6 years (1933-1939) of “1000 years Reich”. There never existed “Fascist Germany” during Hitler's Nazi Party rule. Hitler did not like fascists. We believe that popular term “Fascist Germany” has been
introduced into practice by Soviet propaganda to cover great name and others
similarities between National Socialism (Nazi) of Hitler’s Germany and Soviet Socialism of Stalin’s USSR.
Socialism - Russia and the USSR under the rule of Lenin’s Bolshevik Party (1917-1924) and
several initial years under the rule of Stalin (1925-1933).
Germany under the rule of Hitler’s Nazi Party during last 6 years (1939-1945).
East Germany under the rule of Socialist Unity Party of Germany and control of Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
China under rule of Mao Zedong‘s Communist Party at the period of "primary stage of socialism" introduced into official discourse by Mao.
Cambodia under rule of Marxist-Leninist Cambodian People's Party.
North Korea under rule of Kim Jong-Il.
Cuba under rule of Fidel Castro.
Mature Socialism – The USSR under the rule of Stalin (1933-1953) and later under rule of
CPSS (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) up to 1991.
China after Mao and before introduction of Crony Capitalism elements.
Communism – Before collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, there were many Communist countries
in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa in the XX century: Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Benin, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Congo, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Ethiopia, Hungary, Mongolia, Mozambique, Poland, Romania, Somalia, South Yemen, Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia.
At the present time there are only five communist countries in the world – China,
Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam.
Analysis of policies and activities of various countries demonstrates noticeable difference in behavior of countries with different SES. In some instances, it is difficult to draw line separating policy and/or activity of one SES from another one. Usually a government of any country creates a lot of policies and participates in multiple activities. To compare seven chosen SESs, mentioned above, we have limited ourselves to several government policies and activities, which, in our opinion, represent some (but not all) basic behavioral characteristics of SES:
- Degree of control of elections and freedom of speech during peace time.
- Size of a government.
- Degree of control of country’s economy during peace time.
- Degree of control of private property including land.
- Degree of control of people’s personal life during peace time.
- Treatment of political opponents by the government.
- “Gun” control.
- Treatment of religions.
- Treatment of minorities.
1. Degree of control of elections and freedom of speech during peace time.
Capitalism Free democratic elections and freedom of speech.
Crony Capitalism Active use of political correctness as a tool to control elections and restrict freedom of speech.
Fascism Almost absolute control of elections and limited freedom of speech. Citizens may say
anything except what is not permitted. Violators are sent to a labor camp.
Nazism Absolute control of elections and freedom of speech. Citizens may say only what is
permitted to say by the Party. The truth is a statement that advances interests of
Nazism in the country. Violators are sent to a labor or death camp.
Socialism Absolute control of elections. No freedom of speech. Citizens may say only what is
permitted to say by the Party. The “truth” is a statement that advances interests of
Socialism in the country, otherwise it is a lie. Violators are sent to a jail or to a labor or
a death camp.
Mature Socialism No elections at all or, if elections are organized, they are totally controlled. No freedom
of speech. Citizens may say only what is permitted to say by the Party. A truth is a
statement that advances interests of Mature Socialism in the country. The lie is
anything what government says is not truth. Violators are executed or sent to a labor
or a death camp.
Communism No elections at all or, if elections are organized, they are totally controlled by the
Government. No freedomof speech. Citizens may say only what is permitted to say by
the Party. A "truth" is a statement that advances interests of Communism in the
country. The "lie" is anything what government says is not a truth. Violators are called
enemies of the people and are executed or sent to a special death camp.
All communist countries of XX and XXI centuries were and are under rule of
authoritarian communist regimes.

2. Size of a government.
Capitalism Minimal size of a government which is enough to protect citizens against outside and
inside enemies and to collect taxes.
Crony Capitalism Limited size to protect citizens against outside and inside enemies, to collect taxes, and
to control life of citizens to some degree.
Fascism Limited size to protect citizens against outside and inside enemies, to collect taxes, and
to control life of citizens to high degree.
Nazism Large size to protect citizens against outside and inside enemies, to collect taxes, and
to control life of citizens to extremely high degree. Foreign policy and activity of the
government are aggressive.
Socialism Large size enables government to protect the government and the Party from people,
to protect citizens against outside enemies, to collect taxes, and to control life of each
citizen to extremely high degree. Foreign policy and activity of the government are
aggressive.
Mature Socialism Unlimited size enables government to protect the government and the Party from people, to collect taxes, to protect citizens against outside enemies, and to completely
control life of each citizen from day of birth to day of death. Foreign policy and activity
of the government are aggressive.
Communism Unlimited size enables government to protect the government and the Party from people, to collect taxes, to protect citizens against outside enemies, and to completely
control life of each citizen from day of birth to day of death. Foreign policy and activity
of the government are extremely aggressive.

Communism Total government control of country economy all the time.
4. Degree of control of private property including land.
Capitalism Most property, including land, is private property, which is owned by
non-governmental entities.
Exception is public property, which is owned by state entities, for example, government buildings, parks, army bases, army equipment, and collective property, which is owned by a group of non-governmental entities.
Crony Capitalism Substantial part of property is public property, including land, government buildings,
parks, army bases, army equipment, which for any practical goal belongs to the government.
Anything, which does not belong to government, is collective property or private property.
Fascism Most property, including land, is private property.
Exception is public property, which is owned by state entities, for example, government buildings, parks, army bases, army equipment, and collective property, which is owned by a group of non-governmental entities.
Nazism Substantial part of property is public property, including land, all natural resources, government buildings, parks, army bases, army equipment, which for any practical goal belongs to the government.
Anything, which is not public property, is collective property or private property.
Socialism Substantial part of property is public property, including land, all natural resources, government buildings, parks, army bases, army equipment, which for any practical goal belongs to the government. Everything, which is not public property, is collective property. Land, houses, apartments, businesses, precious metals, etc. can
not be owned by a citizen. Basically a citizen may own only personal property.
Mature Socialism All land, all natural resources, air, water, electricity, gas, buildings, houses, precious metals, all food, etc. is public property, which for any practical goal belongs to the government. Everything, which is not public property, is so called “collective” property. Land, houses, apartments, businesses, precious metals, etc. can not be owned by a citizen. A citizen may own only personal property.
Communism Everything is public property or so called “collective” property, which for any practical goal belongs to the government. A citizen may own nothing except few items of personal property.

5. Degree of control of people’s personal life during peace time.
Capitalism Citizens can be involved in any activity, which is not forbidden by law. Historically, in a capitalist country “Ten commandments” are the base of a country law and people’s moral code. Political correctness and government propaganda are not existent.
Crony Capitalism Political correctness and government propaganda substitute laws tosome degree. Therefore citizen’s involvement in some activity, complying with the law, maybe restricted or even punished by the government.
Fascism Citizens can be involved in any activity, which is not forbidden by law. Nationalistic Party rules. Following a fascist Party ideology is a very important thing in life of people.
Nazism Citizens can be involved in any activity, which is not forbidden by law. Nazi (The National Socialist German Workers' Party – NSDAP) Party rules. Following Nazi Party ideology of National Socialism is the most important thing in life of the people. Life of many people is controlled by the government and by the Party.
Socialism Forbidden everything what is not specifically permitted. Socialist Party controls life of citizens from day of birth to day of death. Following Communist Party ideology is
the most important thing in life of people. Life of many people is controlled by the
government and by the Party.
"Any socialist country is a country with an unpredictable past."
Mature Socialism Forbidden everything what is not specifically permitted. Communist Party controls life of citizens from day of birth to day of death. Following Communist Party ideology of socialism/ communism is the most important thing in life of people. All people lives are constantly controlled by the government and by the Party.

Following Communist Party ideology of socialism/communism is the most important thing in life of the people. All people lives are constantly controlled by the Government and by the Party. Based on experience of USSR, China, North Korea and many other countries, citizens must understand that what is permitted today in the evening may or may not be permitted tomorrow morning. Everything depends on opinion expressed on front page of The Party official newspaper, published today (it is critical that yesterday opinion maybe not only wrong but a traitorous one). Collaterals of that approach are: some people are more equal than others, older brother control, and life as described by Orwell in “1984” and “Animal farm” *). Children belong to the government and not to the parents – government decides what children eat, learn, play, etc. Government controls what people talk about in a family kitchen. Official propaganda claims that The Party and the Government are more important for any citizen than the family. Government is the only owner of the any property except few items of personal property. Everybody works only for the government. Government is the only landlord in a country. Any Communist country is a country with an absolutely unpredictable past.

*) George Orwell, “Nineteen eighty-four”, 1949
"Nearly all children nowadays were horrible. What was worst of all was that by means of such organizations as the Spies they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages, and yet this produced in them no tendency whatever to rebel against the discipline of the Party. On the contrary, they adored the Party and everything connected with it… All their ferocity was turned outwards, against the enemies of the State, against foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, thought-criminals. It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children."

6. Treatment of political opponents by the government.
Capitalism Political opponents have the same rights as every other citizen as long as they do not break the law.
Crony Capitalism Political opponents are treated as enemies of the ruling Party and the Government. Most active opponents are persecuted and/or harassed by various branches of the government.
Fascism Political opponents are treated as enemies of the Party and the Government. All known political opponents are arrested and punished by sending to a jail or to a labor camp.
Nazism Political opponents are treated as enemies of the Party, the Government, and the people. All known political opponents are arrested, most active political opponents are executed, all other opponents are punished by sending to a jail or to a labor camp.
Socialism Political opponents are treated as enemies of the Party, the Government, and the people. All known political opponents are arrested, most active political opponents are executed, all other opponents are punished by sending to a jail or to a labor or a death camp.
Mature Socialism Political opponents are treated as enemies of the Dear Leader, the Party, and the Government. All known political opponents are defined as “Enemies of the People and Enemies of The Dear Leader”, arrested and must be executed or send to a GULAG death camp. Whole family (children, parents, relatives, and some friends) of “The Enemy of The People” are arrested and send to a labor camp. The government periodically sends quotas for number of people to be arrested and killed as “Enemies
of the People” to local Party units. If quote has not been completed, Party members
in charge were severely punished.

7. “Gun” control.
Capitalism No “gun” control law. Every citizen has right to own guns and use it to protect himself, his family and the property.
Crony Capitalism No “gun” control law. The ruling Party and government propaganda announce that owning a gun is politically incorrect and strict regulations of guns are needed. Some local governments believe government propaganda and restrict gun ownership.
Fascism Government may or may not forbid ownership of guns.
Nazism Government completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition.
Socialism Ownership of any kind of guns and knives is strictly forbidden. Violators of a law are punished by a jail or a labor or a death camp. Criminals know that citizens cannot defend themselves, the families and the property. Number of crimes in a country drastically increases and stays very high.
Mature Socialism Very much similar to Socialism.
Communism Very much similar to Socialism.

8. Treatment of religions.
Capitalism Separation of church and state. Freedom of religions. If the state religion is established then all other faiths are tolerated.
Crony Capitalism Separation of church and state. Freedom of religions. If the state religion is established then all other faiths are tolerated.
The ruling Party and Government try to support and advance atheism.
Fascism Roman Catholic religion had become an important factor in Mussolini fascism.
The Spanish State had no official religion but Catholicism had become an
important factor in Franco fascism.
Nazism Religion became the 'property' of the government with the introduction of the Reich
Church. There was some diversity of personal views among the Nazi Party
leadership as to the future of religion in Germany.
Socialism “Religion is the opium of the people" is one of the most frequently paraphrased statements of Karl Marx. Abolishing of all religions, including execution of absolute majority of all religion servants and active believers and physical distraction of majority of churches and synagogues is usually one of the first steps of a socialist\communist Government, who came to power in any country.

Mature Socialism Very much similar to Socialism.
Communism Very much similar to Socialism.
9. Treatment of minorities.
Capitalism Most tolerant and most supportive SES to most minorities in XX and XXI centuries. Most governments are Jew phobic and Roma-Gipsy phobic to various degrees. There were no “pogroms” in capitalist countries.
Crony Capitalism Artificially creates difficulties between population majority and minorities and between different minorities. Most governments are Jew phobic and Gipsy-Roma phobic to various degrees.
Fascism Fascist Italy was not officially racist but it created problems for some minorities (Slavs, non-whites races) and especially for Jews. Mussolini did not persecute Jews until Nazi occupied Italy during WWII.
Franco's Spain was one of few European countries that saved thousands of Jews from death during WWII.
Nazism Nazi Party race theory considered many groups as ’undesirables’: Jews, Roma, black
Germans, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and the mentally and physically
disabled. Most of those people have been send to concentration camps and
murdered. These people could not be part of the new ‘racially pure’ Germany.
Socialism Socialist and/or communist ruling Party sees many groups as ’undesirables’: homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and the mentally and physically disabled. Most of those people have been send to labor and death camps and murdered. The Government is constantly involved in many activities directed against various minority nationalities and groups which include political repression (Red Terror, Collectivization, Great Purge), population transfer (Gulag, Golodomor, political abuse of Psychiatry), economic repression, ideological repression (Religion, Suppressed research, Censorship, Censorship of Images). From 1920 to 1951 more than 50 minority population groups (kulaks, Cossacks, “socially dangerous elements”, peasants, Nomadic Kazakhs, Germans, Poles, Kurds, Koreans, Chinese, Harbin Russians, Persian Jews, Azeris, Persians, Assyrians, “Foreigners” from United States, Norway, Sweden, etc, etc.) have been deported, about 40% of them died before they reached final point of transfer, 40% died in concentration camps. Nobody knows how many people died or survived at the end, but the most conservative estimations give number of murdered close to ten million people.
Mature Socialism Everything mentioned above for Socialism is true for Matured Socialism. Josef Stalin planned to deport whole Jewish population (about 5+ million people) of the USSR to Siberia in 1953 but G_d has taken Stalin from the Earth on March 5, 1953, and saved lives of those people and lives of many millions of other people.
Communism Information about treatment of minorities by multiple communist countries of XX century and five communist countries of today, China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam, is very much similar to what is included above for Matured Socialism. But history of communist Pol Pot revolution and genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge Communist regime shows that there is no limits to a communist regime terror;
Pol Pot started as a member of France Communist Party and ended by killing
between 2.5 and 3 million of Cambodia's population of seven million in 3.5 years of his
rule, 1975-79. The same can be said about North Korea and any other communist country. World does not talk much about communist countries, existing today, since truthful information about any communist country may become available only after collapse of a communist regime.

Conclusion
Suggested classification system, as any other classification system, in which ideas and/or objects are recognized, differentiated, and understood, helps to organize thoughts and thereby solve problems related to understanding of nature and critical basic characteristics of any SES. For example, how to educate majority of Democratic Party in the United States, who feels more comfortable with Socialism than with Capitalism, though they never lived in any socialist country and therefore do not know much about socialist system except standard Lenin’s revolutionary slogans published in left liberal media. How to help those low informed people to reach reasonable level of understanding of which of SESs is really democratic, in spite on some shortcomings, and which one is an anti-democratic totalitarian system with huge government, that appropriates unlimited power over people by force, and, using attractive Lenin’s slogans, first disarms all people and after that treats those people as slaves; in so doing, that monstrous anti-democratic system is totally controlled by tiny group of power hungry murderers for whom their goals always justify any means.
